Hatchery And Nursery

This project aims to develop schemes to hold and grow larvae in nurseries and develop protocols to deliver spats to growers. Nursery and holding facilities will also be established.

This project aims to optimize the mussel hatchery and nursery protocol to provide technology in securing a reliable supply of hatchery produced seed to augment the supply of mussel spats for grow-out expansion.

The Philippine green mussel hatchery developed by the UP Visayas researchers is patterned (with slight modification) to the shellfish hatchery in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

The hatchery program for mussel aims to offer year-round supply of quality seed, select for faster growing mussels through progressive grading, and facilitate selective breeding to optimize growth rates, yields, and improve quality of marketable mussels in the Philippines.
